WESTMINSTER DAY, WEDNESDAY 27TH, FEBRUARY 2008.
Last Wednesday, thousands of people from various political parties and anti-European Union groups met outside the House of Commons, united in their demand for a Referendum on the so called revised EU Constitution.
Most entered the house to speak with their own MPs, face to face, demanding that all three parties honour the promise of the referendum in their manifestos at the last General Election. Party Leader Brian Buxton and a group of Popular Alliance members were there at 10.30 and helped to get things going. Meanwhile, across the road at Central Hall, there were continuous meetings with well known anti EU speakers, whilst the lobbying of MPs was still in progress. Brian said, “after all the lies, sneaking and hypocrisy on this issue by Labour and the Lib / Dems, I am amazed that people can still vote for them in any elections and remain as members of these two parties, who are determined to hand over the complete governing of our country to faceless, unelected officials in Brussels.” He also stated, “it is also time for the Conservative party to come clean and tell us their position on membership of the EU.” There is still time, and I hope and urge everyone who has not yet written to their MP’s to do so today. Also The Liberal Democrats are stepping up their campaign for British people to be given a real choice on Europe with a petition. In an email sent to party members today, Nick Clegg says, "In the next few weeks Parliament will be voting on whether to hold a European referendum. The Conservatives are proposing a restrictive referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. My colleagues and I are campaigning hard for the British people to be given a real choice through a referendum on our membership of the European Union as a whole." The European debate has poisoned British politics for too long. If we as a nation are to stride forward confidently into the 21st century and tackle all the new global issues like climate change and terrorism we need to decide once and for all whether that future lies within the European Union, or outside it. (Clegg)
However, the Popular Alliance must point out that while we agree that a referendum on being in the EU itself is one of our main policy aims, we have to warn that the Lib Dems like Labour have already lied to the nation as they promised a referendum on the “constitution” and have now reneged on this manifesto pledge We have, along with many members signed the Lib Dem petition, but we make clear in no uncertain terms that we DO NOT endorse any of the soft criminal loving Lib Dem policies Related Links: Libdem petition on EU referendum BBC - 88% want referendum in latest poll
