A day after the news that their was to be a delay in purchasing the promised two new aircraft carriers, it would appear the Popular Alliance were not the only ones to smell a cost cutting fudge by Blair and his wasteful tax collecting cronies.
The head of the Royal Navy, Admiral Sir Jonathon Band, has warned that the service needs another £1bn to meet future foreign policy demands and has said “give me two carriers and just less than a billion and I will be off your back, a happy boy” Sir Jonathon had argued that Britain faced a choice between remaining as a first division sea-going nation or, as the officer put it, turning into Belgium. He also said that he had raised the issue privately with the prime minister and the chancellor while last year the Army's head, Gen Sir Richard Dannatt, claimed his troops were "at the limit of their capacity". This is very worrying news when the most senior men in charge of our armed forces have to come public, with cap in hand, begging for meagre scraps to maintain our armed forces while the government squanders billions on failed projects and fills the pockets of consultants and private business with tax payers money especially as the Aircraft Carrier Alliance has signed a formal Alliance Agreement and that individual companies have received contracts totalling more than £140M to refine and mature all aspects of the carrier ship design and its in ship equipment, will this be another waste of tax payers money into private hands with nothing to show for it at the end? The Conservatives started the break up and cost cutting of our armed services, and Labour wish to finish the job no doubt hoping the EU will assemble a unified EU military to take over the role of our existing forces. Any attempt to build a EU military would no doubt be portrayed as a wonderful modern equivalent to match the US, but those in the know, realise that such a mish mash of second raters who’s political leaders stomachs are questionable to say the least, would be a complete and utter disaster. Any British government must oblige its obligations to the defence of the UK as well as support the UN and NATO, but to do this, our forces must have the right tools and equipment to do the job, and there can be no compromise when it comes to paying for a professional world class military.
